Place Plans: Developing Holistic Strategies for Growth, Regeneration and Conservation

Looking at innovative and whole settlement approaches to planning for change
Place Plans are ideal planning and management vehicles to help a town or village and its people:
– have a better understanding of the nature of their place
– think collectively about what opportunities there may be for change
– how to orchestrate change, accommodate growth and focus renewal.
Place Plans range in scope from an analysis of the physical, environmental, economic and social strengths of the settlement to developing options and implementation strategies. Importantly they draw on all of these layers at the same time, rather than seeing them as strands of work by different bodies and their audiences. Developing good community input is an essential part of this to work with the grain and character of the place, as the projects will show.
Our speakers will look at four towns or town centres:
– Wellington in Somerset, with the work led by Somerset Council, commissioning Allies and Morrison Urban Practitioners. Wellington is a small rural market town, with a population of 15,000.
– Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch town centres, as a collaboration between Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Council and R³ – the area’s Retail, Leisure and Hospitality Group, appointing Feria Urbanism to establish the BCP Future Lab to develop a vision that will reimagine the three town centres.
